The Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts is back for 2018, celebrating creativity and international art in brand-new ways. This year’s lineup includes many collaborations and award-winning work. The festival brings 11 days of dance, theater, and visual arts performances to life, right in the City of Brotherly Love.
Important Festival Information
When is it? The festival runs from May 31 – June 10, with a massive street fair on June 9.
Where’s it taking place? There are many events taking place across the city in various locations. Venues include the Perelman Theater, the Merriam Theater, Verizon Hall, and Fairmount Park.
Does it cost anything? Tickets are necessary for certain festival events, but there are many free events taking place, too.
There are plenty of cool free events going on throughout the 11-day festival. One of them is Sittin’ In featuring Rare Essence, which takes place June 6 at Commonwealth Plaza, inside the Kimmel Center. Rare Essence has been one of the top go-go bands around for over four decades and plays many shows across the country. They’ll bring their eclectic blend of jazz and freestyle hip-hop (among other genres) to life.
The street fair is held on June 9, from 11:00 am – 7:00 pm. This is one the largest block parties in Philadelphia, with performances, interactive experiences and popular food vendors.
Other Festival Happenings
The PIFA 2018 Gala kicks off the festivities on May 31. One of the most exciting black-tie events in the area, the biennial gala celebrates artistry in the area. Proceeds support PIFA, along with the Kimmel Center’s year-round free arts education programs.
For a magical experience, check out the Cristal Palace performance, performed by Compagnie Transe Express. These aerial performers are known as the pioneers of street art and have performed in over 50 countries across the globe. It’ll get you off your feet and dancing along to the beat!
